Research Interests

Domestic:

Population based research and quality improvement interests including:

  • Avoidance of ED and hospitalizations in the high risk community dwelling geriatric population
  • Polypharmacy medication reduction in geriatrics
  • Interdisciplinary team approach to primary care in the community
  • Atypical use for dementia in community dwelling older adults

Global:

  • Assessment of quality of international programs.
  • Community based research interests pertaining to ethnomedicine and traditional medicine.

Primary areas of clinical practice include:

  • Interdisciplinary team geriatric medicine
  • Diabetes
  • Cardiac: hypertension, lipids, heart failure
  • Anticoagulation
  • Anemia
  • Polypharmacy reduction

 

Assistant Director of the School of Pharmacy Office of Global Health. Responsibilities include: 

  • Development of exchange programs
  • Quality improvement initiatives of current international programs
  • Collaboration with other Offices of Global Health and Global Health Institute on development and implementation of exchange programs and educational opportunities.

Advisor for School of Pharmacy students interested in the following: 

  • International study opportunities as a DPH 1-4. 
  • Pursuing the Certificate of Global Health or Masters in Public Health
  • Careers in global and public health.

Dr. Seys Rañola graduated from the University of Wisconsin School of Pharmacy in 2002 and completed the Pharmacy Practice Residency at the William S. Middleton VA in 2003.  She began her journey in global health by volunteering as a bilingual certified diabetes educator (CDE) at a local community health clinic in Madison. There, she worked primarily with the Latino and Hmong populations providing health education, medication management, and served as a consultant for therapy alternatives to expensive and or foreign medications.

Dr. Seys Rañola first joined the Office of Global Health as a guest lecturer in the Global Health Certificate program and and Global Health Pharmacy seminar class. She has co-lead an Ecuador field experience and was an instrumental group member that established the fourth year Advanced Practice Pharmacy Experience (APPE) in Spain. In 2013 she joined the School of Pharmacy as the Assistant Director of the Office of Global Health.

Dr. Seys Rañola serves as a guest lecture in the School of Pharmacy and the School of Medicine and Public Health.

Lecture topics include:

  • Counterfeit medications
  • Policy aspects pertaining to medication shortages and global access to medications
  • Pharmacist's role in global health

Field Experience:

  • Collaborative teaching of community-based research (CBR) methods involving traditional medicine in Ecuador

Dr. Seys Rañola is currently a member of the Home Based Primary Care interdisciplinary team at the William S. Middleton VA clinic, for which she provides longitudinal chronic disease state medication management for veterans in their homes.  She is also the preceptor for pharmacy students, residents, and medical fellows for this experience.
